INTRODUCTIONB-1.GENERAL.a.This section provides a general explanationof all maintenance and repair functionsauthorized at various maintenance levels.b.Section II designates overall responsibilityfor the performance of maintenancefunctions on the identified end item orcomponent. The implementation of themaintenance functions upon the end itemor component will be consistent with theassigned maintenance functions.c.Section III lists the special tools and testequipment required for each maintenancefunction as referenced from section II.d.Section IV contains supplementalinstructions or explanatory notes for aparticular maintenance function. (NotApplicable)B-2.MAINTENANCE FUNCTIONS.Maintenancefunctions are defined as follows:a.Inspect. To determine the serviceability of anitem by comparing its physical, mechanical and/orelectrical characteristics with established standardsthrough examination.b.Test.To verify serviceability and detect incipientfailure by measuring the mechanical or electricalcharacteristics of an item and comparing thosecharacteristics with prescribed standards.c.Service.Operations required periodically tokeep an item in proper operating condition, i.e., to clean,to preserve, to drain, to paint, or to replenish fuel,lubricants, hydraulic fluids, or compressed air supplies.d.Adjust.To maintain, within prescribed limits, bybringing into proper or exact position, or by setting theoperating characteristics to specified parameters.e.Align.To adjust specified variable elements ofan item to bring about optimum or desired performance.f.Calibrate.To determine and cause correctionsto be made, or to be adjusted on instruments for test,measuring and diagnostic equipments used in precisionmeasurement. Consists of comparisons of twoinstruments, one of which is a certified standing of knownaccuracy, to detect and adjust any discrepancy in theaccuracy of the instrument being compared.g.Install.The act of emplacing, seating, or fixinginto position an item, part, or module in a manner toallow the proper functioning of an equipment or system.h.Replace.The act of substituting a serviceablelike part, subassembly, or module for an unserviceablecounterpart.i.Repair.The application of maintenanceservices (inspect, test, service, adjust, align, calibrate, orreplace) or other maintenance actions (welding, grinding,riveting, straightening, facing, remachining, orresurfacing) to restore serviceability to an item bycorrecting specific damage, fault, malfunction, or failurein a part, subassembly, module, end item or system.B-1
